The app has been available to iPhone users for six months but this recent move means that people can send secure messages to each other regardless of their handset.

The developer has rolled out the app on Google's Playstore, which combines its TextSecure and RedPhone apps.

Signal, an app that allows encrypted messages and calls to be made, is coming to Android, six months after launching on Apple's iOS operating system. A screenshot of the app is pictured above

The company says: 'This is the culmination of our effort to combine TextSecure and RedPhone into one app, which we began on iPhone and are now bringing to completion on Android.'

The Signal app lets users send and receive encrypted text, video and photo messages at no extra cost, as well as make and receive secure calls.
